Fiction:
Vince Flynn is a superb writer. I recommend any of his 9 best sellers. My favorite of all is "Memorial Day." Vince's leading character, Mitch Rapp is the man!
I love reading Steven Pressfield's books. His book, "Gates of Fire" is one of my all time favorite books. I also very much like, "The Afghan Campaign." Steven is a brilliant writer and he has the rare ability to put you in the story down, dirty and bloody with his characters.
I admire Dan Brown's writing genius. "The Da Vinci Code" has just enough truth in it that the story is completely believable. That takes talent and imagination. I love to watch Dan on the History Channel interviews about breaking Da Vinci's code when he says he made it all up and they try to argue the fact in his fiction. How Dan keeps a straight face is positively amazing.
I've read every one of Dale Brown's numerous paperbacks. It seems I buy a new one every time I'm in an airport book store. Dale is a retired Air Force bomber navigator and his military experience bubbles to the surface in all his stories. I particularly like his attention to detail throughout his story descriptions. I recommend you begin with his first book, "Flight of the Old Dog," and read the rest consecutively.
I recommend reading "Message to Garcia" by Elbert Hubbard; it's only 17 pages. It will take about 30 min. to read and a lifetime to contemplate. It was written over 100 years ago and its wisdom still reigns today.
Ben F. Small's book, "Alibi on Ice" is a fun read. I shivered through it and learned all about glacier climbing. His book, "The Olive Horseshoe" is also a very interesting read. He wrote it in first person which is a darn hard writing style to pull off but he did it and did it well. I recommend both books.
Non-fiction:
"Inside the Danger Zone" by Harold Wise is an excellent historical account of the 1987-88 tanker wars in the Persian Gulf and accounts the largest naval engagement the U.S. Navy undertook since WW-II. It provides a precursor of events leading to the Gulf War and reveals combat operations we ran against Iran at a time when Iraq was our ally. The book is meticulously researched and it reads like a Clancy novel.
